How to Choose Tequila

The label can look confusing, but there are only a few words to know. Tequila is sorted by how long it has aged:

  • Blanco (also called silver) is not aged, or barely aged. It is bright, fresh and peppery, and a favorite for margaritas and palomas.
  • Reposado means "rested." A few months in oak make it a little smoother, with soft vanilla and caramel notes. It works for sipping and mixing.
  • Añejo means "aged." At least a year in oak makes it richer and deeper. Many people sip it slowly.

Look for 100% agave on the label. It means the tequila is made only from blue agave.
